Blog 6
I’m a newbie.
A couple of blogs ago I told a story that happened just recently.
Now I’ll tell one about a chance meeting that happened several years ago.
In fact, it’s my first memory of being surprised by a long distance chance meeting.
It’s 1300 miles from our home to Disney World — the Kingdom Magic to every kid.
If you’re in a family with small children, sooner or later you’re going to end up there.
Sooner in our case — since Disney had barely pushed open his first Florida Park gate.
In fact — the park opened Oct. 1, 1971 — an article on opening dates is at …

Spring vacation 1973
With a big case of “Magic Kingdom” fever we packed up and headed to Florida.
The trip took us two days — The morning after we hit the “Mouse-dom’s” parking lot.
You would think after two days of heading away from home …
There would be a very
“Slim Chance” or even a “Fat Chance” — (why do these have the same meaning?)
of meeting anyone you know …
Not this time !!!
Soon we were standing in a ticket line, waiting to experience the “MAGIC”.
On that day 71,997 other people were going to buy into the Magic as well !!!
The total attendance in those days was highly publicized at every gate.
In any case there were many many ticket lines. We were in just one.
All of a sudden … I hear this voice … “Rich what are you doing Here?”
I looked around and right behind us was standing my fellow co-worker, Don R.
HE TOO HAD COME 1300 MILES
AND CAME WITHIN SIX FEET OF US TO BUY HIS OWN TICKET.
And you know what? — we never saw Don again that whole day.
I guess the park was too big! Or we had used up our rare meeting quota for the day.
What are the Chances? How rare can a meeting like this be?
What’s its probability? One chance in a million? One chance in a billion?
Who knows!
I wish someone knew enough about statistical probability to figure it out.
Maybe you do. If so write me a note.
It’s been 38 years since this happened. It impressed me …
Don R. and I still talk about it every time we meet –
which is hardly ever these days.
We’re both retired.
