I say to myself – every time a rare event happens to me –
I gotta write this down.
So here I am, a newbie blogger writing on rare events.
My most intriguing rare events have to do with meeting,
“Familiar Faces in Faraway Places“.
Unusual times like when you’re halfway across the country and
you go into a store and run into someone you haven’t seen in years.
I’ll save that story for another day.
For now I’ll just try to explain some things about rare events. To me a rare event is one which hardly ever happens.
An on-line dictionary puts it this way …
“A Rare Event is one that’s particularly significant, interesting, exciting, and/or unusual.”
I like this definition since I’m very impressed whenever a “WOW” feeling comes over me,
and I’m totally surprised by a TRULY RARE EVENT.
Some years ago Loren Cobb put an article on the Internet
which attempted to clearly define a rare event in mathematical terms.
You can look his article up yourself.
His article titled “A Scale for Measuring Very Rare Events”,
is at the following Internet address …
Topics I like to focus on are what Mr. Cobb calls “micro-chance events “.
He claims a “micro-chance event” has a one in a million chance of happening.
Micro-Chance events really intrigue me since they occur so infrequently.
I sometimes wonder – why do they ever happen to me?
And, yet everyone seems to experience them at one time or another !!!
